The world’s largest Swan Lake show from China is now in The Netherlands. Instead of 16 swans, there are in total 48 swans in this version of Swan Lake. They are all ballet dancers from the Shanghai Ballet. English choreographer Derek Deane has created a big theatre version of Swan Lake with the Shanghai Ballet. The Chinese dancers are dancing on the music of Tchaikovsky. Matthew Golding plays Prince Siegfried and Ksenia Ryzhkova plays Odette.

The Swan Lake ballet consists of 4 acts. In act 1 Prince Siegfried is celebrating his birthday with friends. His mother shows up and tells him that he must get married. On the following night he must choose a bride at the royal ball. In the evening he and his friend see swans and they decide to go on a hunt with a crossbow.

During act 2 Siegfried wants to shoot on the swans, but then a swan transforms into a woman. She is the swan queen Odette which is under a spell by Rothbart. By day she and the other girls are swans. Only at night at the enchanted lake, they return to human form. The spell can only be broken if one swears to love Odette forever. Siegfried and Odette dances together and they fall in love.

Rothbart arrives in disguise with his daughter Odile. She has transformed to appear as Odette. Siegfried thinks he is dancing with Odette and he intends to marry with Odile. Rothbart then tells Siegfried that she isn’t Odette and he goes back to the lake.

In the final act 4 Siegfried finds Odette at the lake. She is heartbroken. Siegfried apologizes and she forgives him. They fall in love again. The swans dances around the couple and they are happy to be united again.

My thoughts on Swan Lake

Swan Lake Shanghai Ballet in Amsterdam Carré

This is my second ballet show so far. Years ago I have seen the ballet show of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Julia, which was also in Amsterdam. I thought that version was a bit odd, since Shakespeare is all about the dialogue. Without it, it feels not complete. I have never seen Swan Lake before to be honest. So last night it was a new experience for me. I must say that it was pretty amazing to see so many dancing swans at once. It is really a beautiful sight. It really feels like the dancers have spread their wings and are flying across the stage. I think the dancers of Shanghai Ballet are phenomenal and this version of the Swan Lake is a must-see!
